Synopsis: Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow follws the tragic death of Mu Doek (Naksu) and Jang Uk being brought back to life by the ice stone. He lives his life in misery for the next three years, struggling to move on from the death of his true love. One ordinary day during his usual mission, while chasing a wild one, he discovers the eldest daughter of Jinyowo (Bu Yeon) locked in her home. She is the only one who can see the ice stone inside him. Bu Yeon convinces Jang Uk to help her escape, but he refuses. Eventually, he agrees on the condition that she will escape after three days, to avoid being blamed for her escape.
Bu Yeon’s mother has arranged a marriage for her eldest daughter. She is to marry this man so that she will remain locked up in her house. This is a mother who has lost her child before and fears losing her again. Bu Yeon lost her memories due to an illness; therefore, she is not aware that she is actually Naksu. Her physical facial features look like those of Naksu, and Jang Uk has never seen Naksu in her own body; therefore, he is not aware that the young lady he met at Jinyowo is the girl he is mourning.
